Country Star Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 35 Years After Beginning Career
More than three decades after beginning his journey in country music, Kenny Chesney is once again making headlines on the charts.
The country superstar's latest single, "Carry On," has entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 100, marking another major career milestone 35 years after he began performing regularly in Nashville clubs in 1991.
The achievement comes as Chesney launches a new chapter in his career with Hey Now Records and prepares to release his upcoming studio album, Silver Sands Marina.
Released on May 8, 2026, "Carry On" is Chesney's first solo single since 2024's "Just to Say We Did." The song quickly gained momentum at country radio and among listeners, helping push it onto multiple Billboard charts. Along with reaching the Hot 100, the track peaked at No. 29 on Hot Country Songs and No. 12 on Country Airplay.
The chart appearance adds another accomplishment to a career that has already produced millions of album sales, dozens of hit singles and some of the biggest tours in country music history.
Chesney's latest success is especially notable considering how long he has remained a force in the genre. After graduating from college, he moved to Nashville and worked his way into the local music scene. In March 1991, he passed an audition to sing at The Bluebird Cafe and later became a regular performer at a local honky-tonk bar.
That path eventually led to a recording contract and the release of his debut album, In My Wildest Dreams, in 1994. Since then, Chesney has built one of country music's most successful careers, selling more than 30 million albums worldwide and earning numerous industry honors.
"Carry On" has become one of the most talked-about country releases of 2026. The song was co-written by Jessi Alexander, Matt Jenkins and Chase McGill, while Chesney co-produced the track alongside Buddy Cannon. Originally recorded by Pryor & Lee in 2021, the song found new life through Chesney's interpretation.
The track also generated a historic response from country radio. During its first week, all 158 reporting stations added "Carry On" to their playlists. That gave Chesney the biggest add day of his career and made the song just the third in Mediabase history to receive support from every reporting station during its debut week.
Moreover, the success of "Carry On" follows several landmark moments for the singer.
In 2025, Chesney was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, recognizing a career that has spanned more than three decades. He also joined Hey Now Records in March 2026 as the flagship artist for the newly launched independent label.
The song's positive message, combined with its strong radio performance, has helped fuel its early chart success. A music video directed by Shaun Silva was also released in May, featuring Chesney in Key West alongside local artist and sailor David Wegman, per Country Now.
Thirty-five years after arriving in Nashville and performing in a modest honky-tonk, Chesney is still reaching new audiences, collecting new chart achievements and adding another chapter to a career that continues to evolve.
