The Big ToDo: The Charlie Daniels Band comes to Columbus Nov. 10

The show The Charlie Daniels Band will be giving in Columbus is about more than just entertainment.

On Nov. 10, the popular musician and his band will perform at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts.

Titled "One Nation Under God: The Charlie Daniels Band Tribute and Benefit Concert," the show will honor the military.

Not only that, but proceeds will also go toward Camp Laughing Child, a Christ-centered therapeutic adventure camp for institutionalized children living with a terminal illness.

A special focus of Camp Laughing Child is the development of healing camp programs for children who have HIV. The children range in age from 6-12.

Located on seven acres in the mountains of southern Mexico, Camp Laughing Child provides creative nature-based and animal-assisted therapies to no more than 12 children at a time.

Not only will the concert benefit Camp Laughing Child, but there will also be a Bluegrass & BBQ Benefit Luncheon featuring a silent auction at the RiverCenter the same day.

The Charlie Daniels Band is best known for the hit record "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," which won the group a Grammy for Best Performance by a Group or Duo in 1979. The band also won one for Best Southern Gospel, Country Gospel or Bluegrass Album in 1996 for "Amazing Grace: A Country Salute to Gospel."

You can't tie Daniels to one style of music. The North Carolina native, the son of a lumberjack, performs rock, country, bluegrass, blues and gospel.

After graduating high school in 1955, Daniels, who plays guitar, fiddle and mandolin, started a rock 'n' roll band and went on the road.

A member of the Grand Ole Opry, Daniels worked for many years as a studio musician in Nashville. He played on the Bob Dylan albums "Nashville Skyline," "New Morning" and "Self Portrait." His band's latest album, "Off the Grid -- Doin' It Dylan," is a compilation of Dylan songs.

The 78-year-old Daniels has also done recording sessions with artists such as Leonard Cohen, Ringo Starr, Pete Seeger and The Marshall Tucker Band.

His songs have been performed by artists such as Elvis Presley and Tammy Wynette.

His band's hit singles include "Uneasy Rider," "The South's Gonna Do It" and "In America."

In 1998, Daniels was the recipient of the Pioneer Award at the Academy of Country Music. At that time, President Gerald Ford said, "Charlie's love of music is only surpassed by his love of people, especially the American people."

Daniels is involved in many charitable causes. For example, each year, he hosts the Charlie Daniels Celebrity Golf Classic & Angelus Concert in Hudson, Fla., a benefit for The Angelus, a full-time residential facility and day school program for the severely handicapped.

In 2014, he co-founded the Journey Home Project, a nonprofit that assists in securing funds to help causes that benefit veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
