The arts and cultural scene in Columbus has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years and it's looking like 2016 continue that trend. Here are six events not to miss in 2016. Mark your calendar and purchase tickets early!
1) Columbus Symphony Orchestra's Mozart and Friends Festival (Jan. 7, 12, 16): This series of three concerts in January will feature some of the most accomplished musicians in Columbus: cellist Wendy Warner (Jan. 7), violinist Sergiu Schwartz (Jan. 12) and pianist Alexander Kobrin (Jan. 16). Get your tickets early. These concerts in Legacy Hall will likely sell out. (csoga.org)
2) "Peter and the Wolf" presented by The Columbus Ballet and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (Jan. 31 and Feb. 1): Tchaikovsky's famous ballet comes to the RiverCenter of the Performing Arts through the collaboration of two local arts organizations. If you have young children, check into their school performances on Feb. 1. (More information at thecolumbusballet.net)
3) Rising Stars of the Metropolitan Opera (Feb. 19): Don't miss the opportunity to see top Met finalists at the RiverCenter this February. This annual tour showcases up and coming singers who are on track to become the next generation of opera stars. (rivercenter.org)
4) "Mother of Rain" (April 7-17): Based on the novel by local author Karen Spears Zacharias and adapted for the stage by Paul Pierce, producing artistic director of the Springer Opera House, this premiere at the Springer has deep roots in our area. (springeroperahouse.org)
5) "42nd Street" (April 30): The famous Broadway classic that features some of the most iconic tap ensemble numbers in history is coming to the RiverCenter. This is a wonderful show for all ages and a great show for families. Purchase tickets early as tickets to this show are likely to go fast. rivercenter.org
6) Bunny Hinzman Solo Art Exhibit: Bunny Hinzman is a student at Columbus State University and is preparing for her first solo exhibition. Her work is focused on drawing, digital drawing, photography and sculpture. She has won numerous international awards and currently has work on display in Rome. The dates for her solo exhibition have not been announced yet, so stay tuned for more information on this event. (art.columbusstate.edu)
