River City Horns concert moved to Saturday night
River City Horns provides a big band sound you do not hear very often these days.
It is a 12-member musical group featuring a rhythm section and full brass section.
River City Horns will be performing a free concert at 7 p.m. Saturday on the 1000 block of Broadway in downtown Columbus. The concert was originally scheduled for Friday but bad weather forced a move.
The three-hour show is the kickoff for the Friday Night Concert Series.
Other shows planned are The Satin Finish Band on April 8, LavaLamps on April 15, Departure: The Journey Tribute Band on April 22, Cale Dodds Band on May 13, The DI Evans Band on May 20, and The Zach Laughlin Band on May 27.
Members of River City Horns are from the Chattahoochee Valley area.
Sam Ruffner, who plays rhythm guitar and trumpet, said he has performed off and on with some band members for 45 years.
“There is about 350 years of entertaining experience here,” Ruffner said.
Also, he added, a lot of talent.
Some members have played with other bands. Ruffner said some still do.
Ruffner said the popular band does a lot of weddings and corporate events.
River City Horns labels itself a rhythm and blues soul band.
While there are some contemporary numbers played, the emphasis is on the work of great artists from the past such as Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Ides of March, The Platters and The Tams.
“It is a lot of fun,” Ruffner said of the show.
While Ruffner does some singing, he said the real treat is the band’s female vocalist Devan Fleming, whom he called “terrific.”
River City Horns was scheduled to perform downtown in October last year but the concert was canceled because of rain.
“We are looking forward to the show and are hoping for better weather Friday night,” Ruffner said.
