Run for Their Lives helps Russell County Child Advocacy Center
Lynn Hammock says the annual Run for Their Lives 5K & 1-Mile event seems to get bigger every year.
“It is a wonderful for us,” said the executive director of the Russell County Child Advocacy Center, which receives the proceeds. “When groups do fundraisers like this it allows us at the center to provide the quality services needed.”
This is the eighth year for the run, which is sponsored by Dr. Stephen Cooper at Phenix City Spine and Joint Center.
A chiropractor, Cooper is a former board member of the Russell County Child Advocacy Center.
“Even though he is now president of the Russell County Crisis Center, he has not forgotten us and we are grateful,” Hammock said.
The run is Saturday at 8 a.m., beginning by the center at 3700 South Railroad St.
“The Russell County Child Advocacy Center has always been dear to the heart of Dr. Cooper,” said KaLeen Duer, Phenix City Spine and Joint Center marketing director.
She said the run is not an easy one, but it is “lots of fun.”
Running takes place on Lakewood Golf Course.
The Russell County Child Advocacy Center is a nonprofit agency organized in 1997 to provide a neutral child-friendly facility for abused children to meet with professionals who are responsible for and dedicated to investigating and easing the trauma of abuse.
According to its website, the purpose the center is three-fold. The goals are to coordinate forensic interviews of child abuse victims, to promote a multidisciplinary team approach to child abuse investigations and to provide quality counseling, advocacy referral and support services to child abuser victims, adult supervisors and their families at no cost.
A big part of the center’s work is to educate the public regarding the extent of child abuse, promote public awareness, encourage the reporting of such abuse, and be a resource to all citizens of Russell County regarding the dynamics and prevention of such abuse.
“We are working with 150-160 children a year,” Hammock said.
