Where to watch the Best Picture nominations

The Academy has released its list of best picture nominations, what it considers the most important movies to come out this year. Most of these films have cycled out of Chattahoochee Valley theaters, but a few are available on the big screen in Atlanta.

The Oscars air on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. eastern on ABC.

The Big Short

Four Wall Street outsiders use eccentric insights into the U.S. financial markets to predict meltdowns in the housing market and big banks in 2008. The group bets on a coming catastrophe and amasses a fortune.

"The Big Short" also received nominations for an Actor in a Supporting Role, Directing, Editing and Adapted Screenplay.

Bridge of Spies

A New York insurance lawyer is enlisted to defend Rudolf Abel, who is accused of spying for the Russians. The CIA then sends Donovan to East Berlin to negotiate with the Soviets to exchange Abel for captured U.S. Air Force pilot Francis Gary Powers.

"Bridge of Spies" was included in the nominations for an Actor in a Supporting Role, Original Score, Production Design, Sound Mixing and Original Screenplay.

Brooklyn

Eilis Lacey leaves Ireland in 1952 to immigrate to Brooklyn to find work. She falls in love with an Italian American suitor and a boy from her hometown after returning to Ireland. She finds herself torn between two countries and two men.

"Brooklyn" also received nominations for an Actress in a Leading Role and an Adapted Screenplay.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Director George Miller returns to the apocalypse to direct this surprisingly good sequel. Max Rockatansky joins up with Imperator Furiosa as she rescues a harem from a warlord called Immortan Joe in one gigantic car chase.

"Mad Max" earned the second most nominations with nods for Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects and Costume Design.

The Martian

When an unexpected storm hits mars, the crewmates of astronaut Mark Watney assume he's dead and leave him behind when they abandon the mission. Watney must find ways to survive in the harsh environment as scientists on Earth race to rescue him.

"The Martian" was also nominated in the categories of Actor in a Leading Role, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects and Adapted Screenplay.

The Revenant

Frontiersman Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is mauled by a grizzly and abandoned on a journey through the American wilderness in the early 1800s. Glass is driven by thoughts of his family and revenge and he chases the men who left him for dead.

"The Revenant" received the most nominations of any movie this year, with potential Oscars for Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

Room

A young woman tries to make a normal life with her five-year-old son after being held in captivity in a shed for seven years.

"Room" was praised by the Academy, who nominated it for Actress in a Leading Role, Directing, and Adapted Screenplay.

Spotlight

The journalists of the Boston Globe uncover a conspiracy of lawyers and government officials who helped the Boston Archdiocese of the Catholic Church hide pedophile priests and deny victims justice.

"Spotlight" received nominations for Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Directing, Film Editing and Original Screenplay in addition to its Best Picture nod.
