Several local high school golfers had the chance to play in the inaugural Cutright Ploeger Cup last weekend. In the end, they had the chance to celebrate a victory at Green Island Country Club in Columbus.

The West Georgia team claimed victory over Middle Georgia in the tournament. Many familiar faces participated in the event, including Columbus’ Faith Scott and Maddy Krueger and Brookstone’s Sanders Hinds and Walker Hinds.

The tournament is named after Ray Cutright and Bill Ploeger, who are Hall of Fame golfers.

Ploeger, who calls Columbus home, has qualified for the U.S. Amateur five times and was named the top senior player in the nation by Golf Digest in 1999. He played collegiately at Georgia Tech and is a member of the school’s Sports Hall of Fame as well as the Senior Amateur Hall of Fame, the Chattahoochee Valley Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

Cutright, a Macon resident, is a PGA Master Professional. He has been the director of golf at Idle Hour Club in Macon since 1993. He was awarded the 2014 PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 2014 and is a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

The second edition of the tournament will be held next year in Macon at the Idle Hour Country Club.
