Former Carver head coach Dell McGee earns recruiting award
Six years ago, Dell McGee was making a name for himself as the head coach at Carver High School. On Wednesday, McGee earned the title of college football's top recruiter.
McGee, now Georgia's running backs coach, was named the Recruiter of the Year by Rivals and 247Sports for his efforts in assembling the Bulldogs' 2018 recruiting class. The Columbus native was instrumental in assembling the country's No. 1 recruiting class, serving as the lead recruiter for five-star players Justin Fields and Zamir White and the recruiter of record for four-stars James Cook and Chris Smith.
McGee also played important roles in the recruitments of several other Bulldogs signees, including offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer, defensive end Brenton Cox, center Warren Ericson and punter Jake Camarda.
McGee has established himself among college football's top assistants in a relatively short amount of time. He left Carver after the 2012 season and went to Auburn for one year, where he served as an analyst. He was Georgia Southern's running backs coach for two years after that before Georgia head coach Kirby Smart added him in 2016.
McGee posted an 88-19 record in eight seasons at Carver. The Tigers went 15-0 in 2007, ultimately winning the Class 3A state championship.
In October, McGee explained how his time at Carver helped him become the coach he is today.
"I learned a lot of lessons," McGee said. "We ran a great program and actually built the program up to where we were perennial contenders each year. It taught me a lot about being a coach. You don’t have all the answers when you first start. It was definitely a learning process, but it was great."
