The body of a 20-year-old man who went missing while swimming with friends in the Chattahoochee River this week has been recovered, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Divers found the man’s body around 11 a.m. local time Friday, June 10, days after he disappeared in the Akers Mill area near the Cobb/Fulton County line, multiple news outlets reported, citing DNR officials.

His body was found in about 13 feet of water, DNR spokesperson Mark McKinnon told McClatchy News. Authorities haven’t released the man’s identity, pending notification of family.

Game wardens were called to the area Monday, June 6, about a possible drowning near a popular diving rock along the river, according to WXIA. The 20-year-old was swimming with a group of friends when witnesses said he went under and never resurfaced.

“Their intention was to swim across to the diving rock, but because the current was moving so fast... it pushed them down the river,” Cobb County police officer Shenise Barner told WAGA.

DNR officials launched sonar-equipped boats into the water in search for the missing man, with help from Cobb County police and fire officials, WCGL reported. The National Park Service also assisted in the search.

Akers Mill is about 10 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
