Idle entertainment

You don't have to wait until the bars open to be ruthlessly judged by your peers this weekend.

Luckily, WXTX FOX 54 will host auditions for Columbus Idol on Saturday at Peachtree Mall, 3131 Manchester Expressway.

The event is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on the stage in front of Macy's.

The winner will get a "fast pass" to audition in front of some "American Idol" judges (not Paula, Randy and Simon) in Philadelphia Aug. 27.

Participants will have one minute to sing a cappella, and auditions will close once organizers reach the 154th singer. Contestants must be 16-28 years old and live within the station's viewing area.

If that doesn't quench you thirst for cover tunes, head to Scruffy Murphy's Saturday night for a performance by Atlanta-based party band Lixx.

The act's two female members sported Catholic schoolgirl uniforms and fishnets the last time they were in town. The show starts around 10 p.m., and it's part of the $8 downtown bar crawl cover charge.

Finally, end your weekend with a Sunday dinner at Char-Broil Steakhouse (3546 Hwy. 280/431 N., Phenix City). The recently opened restaurant has already spurred a solid local fan base. Sunday's hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
