An American soldier killed Tuesday in Iraq has been identified by the Department of Defense as a member of the 3rd Infantry Division from Fort Benning. Staff Sgt. Jeffery L. Hartley, 25, of Hempsted, Texas, died Tuesday in Kharguliah, Iraq, after his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd ID.
Hartley is the third 3rd Brigade Combat Team soldier to die in combat since last October, when three members of the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment were killed in Salman Pak, Iraq. Since the brigade was deployed in March 2007, it has lost 26 soldiers in combat, mostly in roadside bomb explosions.
