Friday is a special day for me. It's the anniversary of when a select few of my heroes were toppled from power after more than a year's work of building up what some would call a dictatorship. Saturday, naturally, is the anniversary of when they all got their heads cut off. Be sure to raise a glass in their honor.
But what glass to raise? On Friday, uncork a red while enjoying the sounds of Peggy Jenkins with the Rhythm Roosters at Broad Street Blues, 913 Broad St., in Phenix City. The music starts at 9:30 p.m. Check out the men's bathroom while you're there. Last time I dropped by they had this odd contraption set up in the bathroom — a conversation starter, if nothing else.
On Saturday, raise a glass of beer with the Chattahoochee Valley Hash House Harriers. The drinking/running/drinking club is starting their run at the Bibb Mill, at 38th Street and 1st Avenue, at 5 p.m. Expect a mile to two mile run, or walk, if you prefer. Get all that and more for a mere $5. It's free for first-time runners.
And on Sunday, raise a glass, or cup, of coffee to your parched lips. The new Starbucks is up and running at the corner of Woodruff and Manchester Expressway. I'll probably get a $4.50 bottle of water — a libation no doubt gained from the tears of Seattle-based emo kids who don't read their history.
