Former Fort Benning soldier pleads guilty to vehicular homicide

A former Fort Benning soldier pleaded guilty Thursday to vehicular homicide and was sentenced to five years in prison, followed by seven years’ probation, court records state.

Alan Velazquez, 21, caused the death of Ryan Wilson, 36, around 2 a.m. Aug. 15, 2008, as Velazquez was driving east on Macon Road, authorities said. Velazquez lost control of his 2007 Toyota Scion, skidded off the road and into the parking lot of Crystal Valley Storage.

He hit a cement pole and utility pole, which sent the Scion into a parked rental truck.

Wilson, who was a passenger in Velazquez’ car, died in the accident. Velazquez and another passenger were sent to The Medical Center.

“Unfortunately, two lives are ruined by the unfortunate accident,” said defense attorney Stacey Jackson, who represents Velazquez. “Of course, Mr. Velazquez feels terrible about what happened.”

Velazquez was in the military when the wreck occurred, though he’s now a civilian, Jackson said. As a specialist, he was assigned to the 11th Engineer Battalion as a cook.
