Today’s number is 4,000.
That will be the total number of “quarters” on Fort Benning when the present housing construction and renovation project is completed. Halfway through the 10-year project, new homes are being completed at an average of one a day.
When all is said and done, there will be fewer houses, about 200 less, than was first anticipated when Fort Benning partnered with Clark Realty to build and Pinnacle to manage housing in January 2006 under the Residential Communities Initiative, an Armywide move to privatize housing.
Various factors contributed to the decrease in housing, but the most significant was an Army study of housing in communities surrounding the installation which concluded that local housing markets can support the increased demand for housing anticipated with the move of the Armor School to Fort Benning. That spells good news for off post realtors and developers.
