Up the creek to Uchee

Joseph Kyles fishes almost every day. July 11, he already caught a crappie and heard the alligator calls from across the lake before 10 a.m.

“There’s some nice fish in here,” said the retired Soldier, “and every morning, you can hear the alligator. Look, there’s an alligator gar.”

Uchee Creek Campground and Marina, located on the Alabama side of the Chattahoochee River, offers visitors plenty to do. Not only is there fishing from the pier or boat dock, but guests can rent boats — jon boats, kayaks and canoes — and there’s a boat ramp to launch your own. There are playgrounds, a swimming pool, walking trails, baseball fields and basketball courts. There are cabins, chalets, RVs, pavilions with grills and picnic tables, a lodge and an activity center with a full service kitchen and ice machine all for rent.

Kyles remembers when Uchee Creek only had four cabins. Now there are 39 cabins and 14 chalets, which came in handy for the Hodges-Everett Family Reunion.

Janice Richardson, director of Resource Management for the Maneuver Center of Excellence, said this was the first time her family used the campground. With 150 family members, the cabins and activity center were beneficial, she said.

“We were able to use the activity center for meals, there was plenty of parking for everyone,” said Richardson, whose family originally comes from Houston County, Ga. “Usually, we have well over 500 in attendance, but the others went on a family cruise.”

Ten-year-old Jadon Foster said the picnic and the dancing was the best part of the reunion.
