Army’s top fighters to compete in tourney

Today is the final day to sign up for the 2010 Army Combatives Championship. The tournament, sponsored by the U.S. Army Combatives School and the Maneuver Center, is Thursday through Oct. 3.

Team and individual pre-registration forms must be received no later than today. Late registration will begin at 6 a.m. Sept. 30 at Briant Wells Fieldhouse.

All bouts will take place at Paul R. Smith Fitness Center on Dixie Road.

More than 500 Soldiers from across the Army are expected to compete in the event. The tournament is open to active-duty male and female Soldiers, National Guardsmen, Army Reservists and all other service members attached or assigned to Army units.

Eight Fort Benning Soldiers placed fourth or higher in the 2009 competition. That included first-place victories in the welterweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions.

The tournament showcases the professionalism and talent of the U.S. Soldier and sharpens warrior skills, demonstrates the Warrior Ethos, determines the Army’s best fighters, and furthers the Warrior mindset across the Army, according to the combatives school’s website.

During the three-day competition, fighters will compete within a graduated set of rules, and through a process of elimination, reach the final round, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Oct. 3. An opening ceremony will kick off the event at 9 a.m. Friday. The public is invited to attend any portion of the combatives competition. There is no admission fee and parking is free.

Soldiers interested in competing should contact their local Combatives Master Trainer or visit https://www.benning.army.mil/combatives/index.htm to register. For more information, call 706-545-2811.
