I got a notice that the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Steering Committee of the Chattahoochee Valley was meeting to set the schedule for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Celebration. I didn't go, but I got a copy of the schedule today. Highlights include a diversity forum that will be telecast live, an educational/service campaign for low-income tax filers and a bi-city parade.
The committee includes representatives of different churches, organizations and Columbus State University.
Jan. 1: Kenneth B. Martin of the Antioch Baptist Church in Augusta is the keynote speaker at the kickoff event, a commemoration of the Jan. 1, 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. It's at 10 a.m. in Spirit Filled Ministries, 3898 Mulberry Drive. Also on that day, Hands on the Valley will launch its 2010 MLK Serve-a-Thon that targets low-income tax filers.
Jan. 4-8: City-Wide Spiritual Renewal at Fourth Street Baptist Church, will include guest keynote speaker the Rev. William T. Glynn of Fort Worth. Classes begin at 6 p.m. and services at 7 p.m. 706-324-2055.
Jan. 5: Columbus City Council meeting will present the Unity Month proclamation.
Jan. 8: The MLK Pride Clean-up campaign kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Lonnie Jackson Academy School, 4601 Buena Vista Road.
Jan. 11: MLK Unity Service begins at 6:30 p.m. in the St. Luke Ministry Center, 301 11th St. It's being held by the Muscogee County Clergy Association and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. Call the Rev. Rich Martindale at 706-322-5569.
Jan. 14: MLK Day Observation is at 12:30 p.m. in the Columbus State University Davidson Student Center auditorium on main campus. The speaker is Bishop Ann Hardman of Faith Worship Center. Call 706-568-2273.
