A documentary about "A Chorus Line"

When Peachtree 8 opened, it was a gorgeous, state-of-the-art theater complex. Now, it's kind of dingy and some of the theaters smell bad.

But it's where the Columbus Film Society and Carmike Cinemas show the independent and "art" films that don't attract the crowds that the "Transformers" and "The X-Men" movies draw.

I meant to see "Every Little Step" last weekend, but I waited until tonight, the final night of the week-long run. Unfortunately, we only get to have these films one week at a time. So if you don't see the movie when it opens on Friday, it's gone by the next Friday.

"Every Little Step" is about the Broadway musical "A Chorus Line." There's archival film showing the show's creator, the late Michael Bennett and some of the producers and actors who were in the original show. And the auditions for the current run of the show.

I love "A Chorus Line." Even though I can't dance or sing, I went to the auditions at the Springer Opera House when it was done in 1992.

That year, I turned 40. My birthday party was at the Loft. During a break in rehearsal, the entire cast of the show came to the Loft to sing "One" to me. It was magical. People still talk about it.

Anyway, during the film, when it was showing the auditions where 3,000 aspiring Broadway stars showed up, I swear I saw Zahif Corkidi. Zahif was one of the Aggies/Melvin P. Thorpe singer-dancer in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" in the 2005 production that I was in. I'm going to e-mail him and ask if it was him.

If you like musical theater, this was a really good documentary to see.

I'm going to buy the DVD when it comes out. It's that good. I really am sorry I didn't see it last week so I could have told everyone about it.

If you like offbeat, independent films, then I recommend going to see the movies in the Screening Room. Even if it's not something you're interested in, I think you'll find the movies ranging from excellent to the strangely bizarre. I've never been disappointed.
