In the years I've worked downtown, I'd either walked by or drove by the Scottish Rite building a million times. Well, maybe not a million, but a lot of times.
Last December, my friends Dan and Sandy Dawson presented a show there. I never knew the building had a theater.
When I mentioned it to Springer Opera House artistic director Paul Pierce, he said he knew it and it was a very nice space.
Then the Vagabond Players did a show and I went to the Scottish Rite building to interview the actors. Dan gave me a tour. It's amazing. It's truly a theater with dressing rooms and backstage area. The fly system is amazing with some gorgeous painted drops. There is a stage. The auditorium has space in the middle for tables and chairs. There are fixed seats along the perimeter.
Lighting's not so good, and there's not enough money to get new ones. But it's good enough for the two plays I've seen.
Auditions for "You Can't Get There From Here" by Pat Cook will be 7 p.m. Monday in the Scottish Rite Little Theater, 1027 Second Ave.
The play calls for five women and two men.
And the theater also needs a director and a stage manager.
The play will be produced Oct. 7-9 and Oct. 11-13.
