Carmike Cinemas brings culture to Columbus

Things have changed a lot over the years.

I remember when I used to have to go to Atlanta to see Academy Award caliber movies.

Now, almost all of the Oscar-nominated films come to Columbus.

Those of us who love ballet and opera can go to Carmike Cinemas to get our fixes.

Carmike joined forces with Emerging Pictures in bringing live productions of ballet and opera.

In fact, a woman I know said her friend in Paris can sit in the audience at the Paris Opera House to see the same ballet that she can see right here in Columbus.

That's amazing. Just like using Skype to talk to friends and relatives around the world.

The next Opera in Cinema can be seen at 2 p.m. Sunday with the taped replay at 7 p.m. June 5. It's Verdi's "I Vespri Siciliani" or "The Sicilian Vespers."

Verdi based it on the true story of a French duchess in love with a Sicilian rebel in the 13th century.

The opera can be seen at the Ritz 13.

Tickets are $25.
