Columbus police want to know if alleged rapist was involved in other incidents

An alleged rapist’s method of operation has Columbus police wondering if more than twice he has accosted female pedestrians at gunpoint after pulling up to them in his car.

Dequin Keyon Dozier, 20, of Gazebo Way in Columbus, was jailed Sunday on an armed robbery charge stemming from an incident about 7:40 p.m. Friday at 28th Avenue and North Lumpkin Road, where in black Nissan Altima he is alleged to have pulled up to a 28-year-old woman, pointed a gun at her head and taken her purse before she ran away, detectives said.

A police officer working part-time Sunday at apartments on Farr Road saw Dozier in a vehicle matching that description and questioned him, investigators said. A second officer came to assist, and as a result of their inquiries they decided to detain Dozier, who was arrested at 4:45 p.m., police said.

Noticing similarities, detectives suspected Dozier might have been the culprit in a May 30 rape case.

In that case an 18-year-old woman told police she was walking on Cusseta Road about 10:40 p.m. when a man in a car stopped beside her, pointed a gun and ordered her to get in. He drove to a secluded spot at 330 32nd Ave. where outside the vehicle he raped and sodomized her, police said.

Eventually the woman was able to get away and ran, and the man drove off, officers said.

Detectives said they put Dozier’s picture in a photo lineup, and the 18-year-old identified him as her assailant. Facing charges of aggravated sodomy, rape, kidnapping, armed robbery and two counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime, Dozier is to have a preliminary hearing in Columbus Recorder’s Court at 2 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

Anyone with information on other incidents in which Dozier may have been involved is asked to call sex crimes investigators Cpl. Valerie Holder at 706-225-4406 or Sgt. Craig Haggas at 706-225-4453.
