Believe it or not, Saturday's Family Day in the Park is celebrating its 26th anniversary.
I remember when it first started. WFXE-FM/WOKS-AM had a program director named Phillip David March. He started Family Day in the Park for two reasons. The first is June is Black Music Month. The second was to celebrate Father's Day.
Phillip was one of the best disc jockeys/radio station administrators Columbus ever had.
I was a big fan of his and was sad when he left.
I'm really not sure where he is now, but Family Day in the Park is still going strong. I did send a friend request on Facebook.
It's noon-6 p.m. Saturday at Cooper Creek Park, 4816 Milgen Road.
In the past, we've had people like Joe, Boyz II Men, Jamie Foxx, ABC and Faith Evans perform at Family Day. This year, performers include V.I.C., Travis Porter, Y.N.C.K., Troy Sneed and Cheneta Jones.
Remember if you have small children, some of the hip-hop musicians may have some songs with objectionable language or subject matter. But since the emphasis is on "family," I don't think you really have to worry about that.
If you go, make sure that traffic may be absolutely crazy, so make sure you get there early.
It'll probably be sunny and warm, so make sure you take plenty of water and use sunscreen.
You may take food and grill it on the park's grills or bring your own.
Bring lawn chairs and blankets.
There will be food vendors and a children's play area.
