The text message is all grown up

Bust out the cupcakes, Thunder Thumbs. Dec. 3 marks the 20th anniversary of text messaging. PC Magazine explains that on Dec. 3, 1992, a test engineer used a personal computer to send the text message "Merry Christmas" to a phone.

What a long, strange trip it's been since that date.

For many of us, it's easy to share our personal histories as they relate to the world of text messaging. We remember drunk texts. Celebratory texts. Breakup texts.

Texts that shouldn't have been texts.

What's next? CNN asks if text messaging has peaked, but I've also read stories suggesting the service has overtaken email.
