Food resolutions for 2013

I don't have a perfect record for keeping my New Year's resolutions but in 2012 I did pretty well on my food resolutions. This year, I think I'll skip my usual get-more-organized, learn-a-new-language, travel-to-an-exotic-destination resolutions in favor of adding a few more food resolutions. It just seems easier for me to actually keep my cooking goals.

If you'll allow me to brag... In 2012, I brought my lunch to work at least four days a week. I saved $25 to $30 a week and eating the healthy foods I packed helped me maintain my weight. I also started an herb garden with basil, cilantro and rosemary plants. Although I wasn't always about to keep Mondays meatless, I did have a meat-free day at least once a week. I also took strides to be kinder to the environment by reducing my disposable waste. I even resisted the urge to use paper napkins and disposable dishes at my summer pool parties.

I'm going to continue those habits (I can call them habits now, right?) in 2013 and I'm going to add a few more food resolutions:

-- Have two meat-free days per week.

-- Prepare and eat fish once a week.

-- Learn to make and freeze my own vegetable and chicken stock/broth.

-- Cook with one new-to-me ingredient per month.
