At least two new faces will be in the starting lineup for the Columbus Lions Saturday night at Albany in the form of quarterback Marcus Jones and defensive lineman Franklin Lloyd.
"I've got to give (Jones) an opportunity," said Gibson earlier this week. "Marcus has earned an opportunity to show what he can do. He led a couple of scoring drives (against Knoxville) and I wanted to give (Jones and Week 1 starter Garrett Sutphen) a chance to show what they can do going into the bye week. That way I can see if one of them is the answer or if I need to go in another direction."
Sutphen was 10-for-22 for 135 yards and two touchdowns through the air against the Nighthawks, but was also intercepted three times inside the Nighthawks' 10-yard line - including twice in the end zone - and lost a fumble in Knoxville territory as well. Jones was 2-for-2 for 19 yards and a touchdown after relieving Sutphen in the fourth quarter.
Lloyd, a 6-foot, 300-pounder who played collegiately at Troy, was signed after Columbus suffered a rash of injuries on the defensive line in the Knoxville game. None of the injuries were serious enough to sideline a player long-term, but several players are questionable for tonight's games, so Gibson signed Lloyd as an insurance policy.
