Cloture Invoked By Bama House
The seldom invoked expedient of cloture to shut off a filibuster over reapportionment in the House of Representatives highlighted a fiery Friday session of the legislature.
"Mr. President, I'm glad to have lived this long," said a beaming Harry S. Truman, moving into the spotlight for a sentimental moment at the age of 81.
Then, at President Johnson's elbow, Truman witnessed the signing into law Friday of legislation for health care of the aged such as he proposed 20 years ago.
The $6.5-billion bill also increases old age payments and otherwise broadens the Social Security System, raising payroll taxes to pay most of the cost.
River to Close
Due to military exercises at Fort Benning, the Chattahoochee River will be closed to non-military navigation from the new highway bridge in the Lawson Air Field area on the following dates: Aug. 11, 2-5 p.m.; Aug. 12, 2-5;30 p.m.
