Two knives discovered during Columbus High vehicle search
A senior boy at Columbus High School brought a machete and a Bowie knife onto campus on the first day of school Monday, according to a statement from Valerie Fuller, director of communications for the Muscogee County School District.
She wrote in an email that the weapons, one with a 6-inch blade and the other with a 10-inch blade, were discovered during a vehicle search. The student did not bring the knives into the school, and there were no reported threats or injuries, Fuller wrote.
A Columbus Police officer who was serving as school security at the time said assistant principal Wendell Turner informed her about the incident around 2:15 p.m. Monday.
No arrests have been made in the case, police said.
A police report was filed, and the incident was being handled administratively "as allowed by the Behavior Code and Discipline Policy handbook." Any student who violates a behavior code or discipline policy is "subject to potential tribunal, suspension, or expulsion," Fuller wrote.
