Chief Files Suit

Americus Police Chief Ross Chambliss, charged in a suit now being heard in U.S. District Court with failing to protect civil rights demonstrators, has countered with a suit asking the federal court to restrict Negro demonstrations.

As the hearing before U.S. District Judge J. Robert Elliott resumes today, a reporter for the Atlanta Constitution, Bill Shipp, is to continue testifying.

Pay Raise

Congress completed action today on a billion-dollar pay bill for the nation's servicemen and sent it to President Johnson for signing.

Benning's Loss

The new division the Army will activate in December will be stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., the Army Times reported Wednesday.

Authoritative Washington sources Tuesday night predicted to The Ledger that the division would be formed, trained and equipped at Fort Benning.
