Plans are being made to establish a basic combat training center at Fort Benning to handle thousands of draftees, The Ledger learned today, and authoritative sources said the first batch of recruits for the rapidly expanding Army would be processed into the new center at the rate of some 260 a day six days a week.

Lee Lott, celebrating his 34th birthday Tuesday, became Phenix City's commissioner-elect by narrowly defeating incumbent commissioner J. D. (Doc) Haines in a hotly contest run-off election.
'Shine Case
Three men charged with violation of federal liquor laws were on trial today in United States District Court, a court session that was expected to run into Thursday morning. In the U.S. Court, Charles Blackwell Jr., 46, and David Derrick, 26, Lumpkin and Vernon Tomfton were on trial for violation of liquor laws. All three men are charged with several counts of conspiring to violate internal revenue laws.
