U.S. Could Withhold Fed Funds For Bama
Alabama officials testify today at a hearing which could be a first step toward termination of more than $90 million annually in federal welfare funds for their state. Alabama is the only state which has not voluntarily filed acceptable assurance of compliance with the 1964 Civil Rights Act that it will conduct its activities in a nondiscriminatory way.
Athlete Deaths
High school football fatalities have mushroomed to 21 this season with two more deaths Wednesday. The latest casualties were Sam Wortham, a 17--year--old fullback on the Titusville (Fla.) High School team, and Leslie Pitts, a 17-year-old guard for Orangeville (Ill.) High School.
Education
Five seniors at Carver High School and one senior at Spencer High have been named finalists in the 1965--66 National Achievement Scholarship Program for outstanding Negro students. The six local finalists are Walter Smith of Spencer High School; Florence Battle, Mary Alice Buckner, Maxine Eldridge, Joseph Sales and Terry Tyson of Carver High.
