Lawmakers Get Merger Plan

While talk of consolidation in Muscogee County grew louder and louder, the battle lines this week were clearly drawn -- city commissioners were asking 7--0, that the two governing bodies in the county be merged into one. Next morning, the county commissioners, in a move that was not unexpected, turned the idea down flat. At any rate, the issue now lies in the hands of the delegation to the Georgia General Assembly.

Rights Unit

State School Supt. Jack P. Nix today announced formation of a civil rights unit in the state Department of Education which will provide assistance to local systems on desegregation problems. The unit is headed by B.C. Cloer a former Republican state representative from Towns County.

Anne Frank Case

The Nazi general blamed for the death of Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl whose diary became world famous, is ready to accept any punishment due him, a West German prosecutor said today. Ex-SS (elite guard) Maj. Gen. Wilhelm Harster and two wartime aides are accused of complicity in mass murder after launching the Nazi roundup of Dutch Jews that netted Anne Frank.
