Gas Line Blast Disrupts Service

A major gas line exploded on Whitesville Road today, disrupting gas service to hundreds of Columbus homes and forcing school officials to dismiss classes. Gas company authorities were unsure this afternoon how long it would take to repair the damage, leaving hundreds of Muscogee County residents with the prospect of a cold house tonight.


Three cases of infectious spinal meningitis among recruits at the Army's new Basic Training Center at Fort Benning have been confirmed, an Army spokesman told The Ledger today. Spinal meningitis is a paralytic disease which attacks the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
