Columbus State men fall at Montevallo

FROM STAFF REPORTS

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Columbus State’s struggles against Montevallo continued Wednesday night with a 80-75 loss at TrustMark Arena.

Montevallo holds a 23-6 series record against CSU, including 17 wins in the last 18 games.

The loss dropped CSU (14-6, 10-5) a game behind Montevallo (15-7, 11-4) in the Peach Belt Conference’s Western Division. CSU is a half-game behind Young Harris, which plays Georgia College on Thursday night.

"We brought way more energy tonight than last Saturday," CSU coach Robert Moore said. "But when we had the lead in the first half, we played sloppy and could never catch up. We have to play more in control with leads in general.

"We played hard tonight, but when you play a team like Montevallo, you can't make mistakes and that's what did us in tonight."

CSU led by as many as 11 points in the first half, the largest lead for either team.

The teams were tied at 44-44 in the second half before the Falcons went on an 8-0 run for a 52-44 lead with 12:55 left. CSU closed to within one, 65-64, with under four minutes to go. But Montevallo scored the next four points for a 69-64 lead.

The Cougars were able to get within one on three occasions down the stretch, but they could take the lead.

Cam Baker led CSU with 17 points. Brent Jackson added 15. DeMarcus McVay and Armen Camaj had 14 apiece.

Bryant Orange led Montevallo with 27 points, and Terrell Lipkins added 26.

CSU will host Young Harris at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
