College Baseball Roundup: Columbus State University defeats North Georgia 7-2
Brandon Koehler (3-0) gave up just one earned run on three hits as No. 28 Columbus State downed No. 7 North Georgia 7-2 on Sunday at Bob Stein Stadium.
The win gave CSU the series win over North Georgia.
"Once again, we found a way to battle back after falling behind," CSU coach Greg Appleton said. "Our guys never stop fighting and we were able to pick up a big road series win this weekend."
CSU (12-3, 5-1 Peach Belt Conference) tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth as Blake Edwards drove in the run with a double.
After North Georgia regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, CSU scored twice in the sixth.
Christian Miller hit a 2-run homer down the right-field line for a 3-2 lead.
The Cougars put the game away wth four runs in the top of the ninth.
Hunter Bowling and Jackson Oliver drove in runs. Matt Nettles singled in the last two.
North Georgia is now 10-4 and 4-2 in the PBC.
CSU will travel to face Auburn-Montgomery at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
ALABAMA 7,
NORTH DAKOTA 1
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama used four relievers to pitch the six innings and rolled to a 7-1 victory over North Dakota on Sunday.
The win gave the Tide (6-1) a sweep of the Fighting Hawks.
Starter Nick Eicholtz had to leave the game after three innings for undisclosed reasons.
Dylan Duarte (1-0) earned the win as he started the fourth inning and went 2 2-3 innings.
Keith Holcombe drove in two runs for the Tide, which play at Troy at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
GEORGIA TECH 6,
UMBC 1
ATLANTA -- Freshman Jonathan Hughes gave up six hits in six innings, leading Georgia Tech to a 6-1 win over Maryland-Baltimore County on Sunday.
Hughes (2-0) has yet to allow a run in his 12 innings of work this season.
Brandon Gold had a pair of hits and two RBIs to lead the offense.
The Jackets are 7-0 for the first time since 2010.
Georgia Tech hosts Georgia State at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
SOUTHERN 6,
AUBURN 5
AUBURN, Ala. -- Southern won its first game of the year, avoiding a sweep by Auburn with a 6-5 win on Sunday.
John Pope hit a three-run homer as Southern took a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Javeayan Williams added a two-run single in the fifth as Southern took a 5-1 lead off starter Gabe Klobosits.
Niko Buentello hit his third homer of the season in the seventh as Auburn tried to rally.
Auburn (4-3) hosts Alabama A&M at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
WESTERN KENTUCKY 8,
GEORGIA 7
ATHENS, Ga. -- Western Kentucky scored a pair of runs on a Thomas Peter home run in the top of the ninth inning to edge Georgia 8-7 on Sunday afternoon.
Bo Tucker (0-1) took the loss for Georgia.
Keegan McGovern homered and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs.
Georgia (4-3) hosts Charleston Southern at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
