School board to vote on principals for Arnold, Lonnie Jackson
Superintendent David Lewis has made his recommendations on whom he wants to fill the principal positions at Lonnie Jackson Academy and Arnold Magnet Middle School. The Muscogee County School Board will vote on those at its meeting Monday night.
The meeting is at 6 p.m. in the Muscogee County Public Education Center on Macon Road.
For the head job at Lonnie Jackson, Lewis is recommending Amia Burnett who is currently the principal at Mary M. Bethune Elementary in Atlanta, a job she has held since the summer of 2014. She has been an educator for 17 years.
To take command at Arnold, Lewis is recommending Stacy Day who is currently the assistant principal at Wynnton Arts Academy, a position she has held since January. Day, who taught math at Arnold for 10 years, has served as assistant principal at Richards Middle School.
In other school board business:
▪ The board will vote on the recommendation that Sureya Hendrick be appointed as assistant principal at Shaw High School. She currently serves as district content specialist for 6-12 literacy, a position the former teacher at Eddy Middle School has held since 2014.
▪ Ben Braaten is the recommendation of Lewis to be the new school improvement grant administrator at Jordan High School. An educator for 20 years, the former biology teacher at Northside High School is currently the school improvement academic science coach at Jordan.
▪ A proposal has been made to have uniforms at Fox Elementary School. The board will vote on whether to approve that move. A survey at Fox found 100 percent of the faculty voting in favor of the move and 65 percent of the parents who responded.
▪ The board will recognize the person selected as the 2016 outstanding first-year teacher. The nine nominees are Mary Catherine Chambliss of Blackmon Road Middle School, Haley Cross of North Columbus Elementary School, Johnathan Daniels of Rothschild Leadership Academy, Christian Grier of Brewer Elementary School, Haley Hinson of River Road Elementary School, Portia Norris of South Columbus Elementary School, Sheena Odom of Northside High School, Sarah Turner of Mathews Elementary School and Hannah Wertz of Allen Elementary School.
▪ At the request of board member John Thomas, the board will vote on the question, “Shall Muscogee County Board of Education members be given access to read-only, detailed, public financial information remote computer access?”
▪ The board will take official action on a resolution and inter-governmental agreements that establish redevelopment plans and create Columbus Georgia Consolidated Government tax allocation districts in four locations.
Tax Allocation District No. 1: Benning Tech Park is the Benning Technology Park Columbus Redevelopment Area.
Tax Allocation District No. 2: Liberty District is the the 6th Avenue Liberty District Columbus Redevelopment Area.
Tax Allocation District No. 3 is the River District Columbus Redevelopment Area.
Tax Allocation District No. 4 is the Second Avenue/City Village Columbus Redevelopment Area.
▪ The board will vote on awarding a contract to River City Construction to be the construction manager at risk on the remodeling of classrooms for an autism center at Jordan High School.
▪ The board will vote on appointing French & Associates as the landscape architect on the renovation of athletic fields at five high schools, Hardaway, Shaw, Jordan, Kendrick and Columbus. It is a $7.2 million project with funding coming from the 2015 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
