Newest Columbus Councilor Walker Garrett sworn in
Columbus Council’s first newly elected member in six years, Walker Garrett, was sworn into office Tuesday morning by Superior Court Judge Arthur Smith.
Garrett, who defeated Jonathan Davis for the District 8 seat, replaces Tom Buck, who served more than a year as an interim for the late Red McDaniel, who died in office in November of 2014. Normally, Garrett would not take office until January, but the city actually held two District 8 elections last week, one for the next term and one to see who would serve out the rest of McDaniel’s unexpired term. Garrett, of course, won both elections.
Councilors Judy Thomas and Bruce Huff were the last newly elected councilors to join the panel, in 2010.
