1. Benning soldier dies after falling ill on first day of Ranger School: Second Lt. Michael R. Parros, 21, of Walnut Creek, Calif., was in his first day of U.S. Army Ranger School when he fell ill Monday and was transported to Midtown Medical Center to be treated for hyponatremia. He died Wednesday. Hyponatremia is a condition that occurs when the level of sodium in the blood is abnormally low, according to the Mayo Clinic.
2. Establishment candidates repel newcomers in Muscogee school board runoffs: Three-term incumbent Pat Hugley Green defeated former educator JoAnn Thomas-Brown on Tuesday by 814 votes to 602 votes (57 percent to 43 percent) for the District 1 seat on the Muscogee County School Board. Former board chairwoman Cathy Williams also defeated political newcomer Shelia Williams by 378 votes to 228 votes (62 percent to 38 percent) for the District 7 seat.
3. Phenix City woman charged with vehicular homicide in Bradley Park wreck: A Phenix City woman has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide in the July 11 wreck near J.R. Allen Parkway, according to Muscogee County Jail records. Kristen Kimber, 30, surrendered Tuesday to authorities In addition to the homicide charge, she faces one count each of reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and no seat belt.
4. Developer reactivates two downtown buildings: It’s all about timing, and Columbus real estate developer Chris Woodruff is confident he perfectly timed the revitalization of the 1200 Broadway block in downtown Columbus. In 2005, Woodruff purchased two 1800s-era buildings. Construction began last June and, by the end of this year, Woodruff expects them to be occupied.
5. Police: Baby tested positive for marijuana: Shayla Melton, 19, and Taylor Frazier, 19, both of Columbus, have been arrested and charged with first-degree cruelty to children. According to a Columbus police report, the two were arrested for causing injuries to an 11-week-old infant. The infant also tested positive for amphetamines and marijuana.
