How much does the average Georgia resident spend on lottery tickets? Here’s the answer
Got money on your mind? Well, so does the average Georgian.
According to a new study by Lottery Geeks, the average Georgia resident spent a pretty penny on lottery tickets last year.
The study found the 10 most “lottery-obsessed states” using data from the 2023 Lottery Sales Report from the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. The study also focused on each state’s total winnings and population size to calculate just how much each resident is spending on lottery tickets.
Georgia was ranked the seventh most lottery-obsessed state, with each average resident spending about $520 on tickets in 2023.
That’s a lot of cash.
However, there were six other states that out-spent Georgia and here they are:
Number 1: Rhode Island residents spent an average of $939/year on lottery tickets.
2: Massachusetts - $877
3: Maryland - $845
4: West Virginia - $812
5: Delaware - $745
6: New York - $536
And rounding out the top 10:
8: Ohio - $495
9: Michigan - $491
10: South Dakota - $456
Even though many residents are spending more and more on lottery tickets each year, some of the top winners have won by just buying one lottery ticket.
“The lottery has produced some remarkable success stories, with individuals across America experiencing life-changing wins,” said a spokesperson for Lottery Geeks. “For example, the $2.04 billion Powerball in 2022 was won by a California resident who had bought just one ticket.”
Which brings us to the states with the lowest average amount spent on lottery tickets in 2023: North Dakota with just $50/year, Wyoming at $76 and New Mexico with a cool $80.
