Beavers make strong return to Jackson County, Mississippi

Jackson County road crews pulled apart a beaver dam Monday that had backed water up into a field and yards along Humphrey Road in Vancleave and had water threatening the road. By Tuesday afternoon, it was back.

Joe O’Neal, the county roads manager, walked along the roadbed and shook his head.

“We’ve always had a problem with beavers,” he said. “But this year, they seem to have come back strong.”

Katrina actually gave the Coast a beaver reprieve. Experts think it may have been the saltwater surge that ran them up the road, but time has corrected that.

Hancock and Harrison counties signed on with the U.S. Department of Agriculture beaver trapping program again last year to protect roadways. Jackson County decided Monday it was time to get in on an emergency basis until the new budget year starts in July.
