Bomb scare at S.C. bank turns out to be burrito

The Bank of America building at 2805 N. Main St. was evacuated Wednesday after a bank official reported a suspicious package on a counter. Bomb investigators later identified it as a burrito in a white wrapper, Columbia police said.

Authorities responding to the bank at 2:06 p.m. were on heightened alert: About a dozen blocks away, the federal courthouse on Richland Street had been evacuated at 12:44 p.m., following a report of a suspicious package there as well.

Courthouse workers screening a package received in the mail thought there was a threat, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Tim Stec. Authorities later determined there was no threat and allowed everyone back inside the building, Stec said.

Investigators are working to identify the source of the package. Stec would not say what was inside, citing an ongoing investigation.

Both federal and city authorities said there’s no indication the two incidents are related.
