In Florida, consumer confidence surges in April

Consumer confidence rose sharply in Florida this month, as home sales continued to improve and economists said the pace of economic decline is slowing.

National consumer confidence also surged, according to the New York-based business group that tracks it.

The increases are a good sign, although experts caution that consumers are notoriously fickle and may quickly lose heart in the face of more bad news.

The University of Florida's state consumer confidence index hit 71 in April, up six percentage points from March and 12 points from the historic low of 59 last June.
