Hot Air Balloon Rally takes flight at The Rock Ranch

“Until you stand right next to those (hot air) balloons, you don’t realize how big and beautiful they are,” said Adam Pugh of The Rock Ranch, which is hosting a Hot Air Balloon Rally on Saturday.

Pugh said this is the fifth year for the event, which serves as a competition for hot air balloon pilots.

The 15-20 balloons expected to participate will be competing to win a new car provided by Cronic Chevrolet.

The pilots will fly into the Ranch, trying to get close enough to a tall pole in order to pull a key from the top.

If no one is able to complete that task the winner will be determined by pilots flying up several hundred feet and attempting to throw bean bags into a circle on the ground. Closest bean bag to the circle wins.

Depending on the weather, tethered hot air balloon rides will be available, said Pugh, the only activity with an additional cost to admission.

Throughout the day, children and adults can enjoy all of the standard Rock Ranch activities, including train rides, hay wagon rides, paddle boats, pedal cars, pumpkin and corn cannons, an antique tractor museum and more. The Rock Ranch Pumpkin Patch is also open; pumpkins are $5-$8.

The Rock Ranch will be open 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday.
