Two-part Brews & Blues Boogie features beer samples and music Saturday

It’s time to embrace the boogie monster.

Beer and music fans will unite on Saturday for The Loft Backyard Brews & Blues Boogie, a downtown Columbus festival that includes a beer tasting and live music.

The day kicks off with the Brews Boogie, when guests 21 and older will sample over 100 American craft beers. Then, a Blues Boogie invites guests of all ages to enjoy music throughout the rest of the night.

The festival is held at the Rankin Courtyard and The Loft.

Still baffled by the boogie world? Here’s a guide to Saturday’s event.

Brews Boogie

Don’t worry, the brew portion of the festival is slightly more exciting than passing around room-temperature beer cans on a Saturday night.

For $25, you’ll sample offerings from brewers like Yuengling, Magic Hat, Red Brick, Blue Moon, Southern Tier, Spoetzl, Gordon Biersch, Kona, New Belgium, Anheuser-Busch and more — not to mention microbrews from the Cannon Brewpub, the event’s host brewer.

Guests will receive 3-ounce samples in a 5-ounce mug, which they can keep after the festival. Attend the Brews Boogie and you’ll get complimentary VIP admission to the Blues Boogie.

A portion of the day’s proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network and UPtown Columbus.

Also, you’ll be able to watch SEC football on the big screen throughout the afternoon and evening. Foods like hamburgers and hot dogs will be available to purchase.

Blues Boogie

Featured performer Heather Luttrell admits beer isn’t her No. 1 alcoholic beverage. But think twice before assuming she’s a fan of sugary girly cocktails.

“I’m a whiskey girl,” Luttrell said in a recent phone interview. She hails from the Atlanta area and will perform with a group on Saturday.

Luttrell will showcase a unique blend of blues, Americana, funk and folk.

“Prepare to be shocked,” she said. It’s not an exaggeration — Luttrell’s big voice has a tendency of surprising people. She cites influences like Joni Mitchell and Patty Griffin.

The Blues Boogie emphasizes blues, rock and soul. Open to all ages, it will include three stages showcasing live music until the late hours of the night.

The two outside evening stages are open to all ages, but the Loft Live stage is for guests 21 and older.

In addition to Luttrell, guests will hear Kent DuChaine (Fort Gaines, Ga.), Eric Culberson Trio (Savannah), Rick Fowler Band (Athens) and The Good Doctor (Auburn-Opelika).

Looking for local acts? You’re in luck. Neal Lucas, Marshall Ruffin, Lloyd Buchanan and Eric Rose are also on Saturday’s lineup.
