Will cornbread be crowned Georgia’s official state bread? What new house bill says
White, wheat, sourdough, rye…or corn? Which bread is worthy of being named Georgia’s official bread?
Well, it’s looking like cornbread might reign supreme in the Peach State. Here’s why:
According to proposed House Bill 14, Republican State Representatives Kasey Carpenter, Steve Tarvin and Tim Fleming, and Democrat Omari Crawford, requested cornbread formally become the official state bread of Georgia.
There’s also a proposed house bill to formally make collard greens the official state greens of Georgia.
Curious how Georgia stacks up against other state food picks? Here’s a list of several other official state foods:
The official state dessert of Alabama is the Lane Cake, a layered cake made with bourbon, pecans, coconut and raisins. While it gained notoriety in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the cake was invented by a Georgia native.
Pan de campo is the official state bread of Texas. It’s a large flatbread known as cowboy bread.
Lemonade is Arizona’s official state beverage.
Connecticut’s official state cookie is the snickerdoodle.
Hawaii’s official state food is the coconut muffin.
The official snack food of Illinois is popcorn.
