Every dog makes a massive difference in their humans' lives, but only a small percentage of pups make the cut as service dogs. To become service dogs, furry friends undergo years of specialized training, and some are even raised by volunteer puppy raisers from the time they can leave their moms. Walsh was one of those dogs, though his story didn't end how everyone thought it would.

That's because he flunked out of service dog school! This Labrador Retriever decided to pursue a different path in life, but he never expected the sweetest surprise that was waiting for him the moment he left training. But judging from his reaction, it was the best surprise he could have imagined!

The vet school student who raised Walsh as a baby returned to adopt him! Volunteer puppy raisers have one of the cutest and most rewarding jobs, but saying goodbye as their pups matriculate to specialized training is as bittersweet as can be. However, a lucky few get the chance to spend forever with their service dog dropouts, just like Walsh's mom did!

"Since he flunked out and you raised him, do you get the chance to adopt him?" one commenter asked. After building such a close bond during puppyhood, that must be the case.

"Yes, we get first choice," the dog mom confirmed. "It was the easiest decision ever!" When a dog adores their person as much as Walsh adores his mom, there's no question it was meant to be.

Another viewer summed up the happy ending perfectly when they wrote, "Aww! It was so nice of you to help raise a service dog…. and even nicer of him to flunk out so you could be reunited." Maybe this was Walsh's plan all along!

Raising Service Dog Puppies

Dogs who are raised to be future service dogs begin their journey the moment they're born. Those who show positive responses to various sensations and stimuli meet their volunteer puppy raisers at just 8 weeks old and spend the next year or longer in their care. At this impressionable age, puppies learn a variety of essential skills that will help them in their future jobs.

Between 1 and a half and 2 years of age, puppies begin their time at service dog school. Some pups, like Walsh, don't make the final cut, but those who do are one step closer to meeting the person whose life they will change forever.
