WATCH: First-Look at Antoni Porowski's National Geographic Docuseries 'Best of the World'
It takes anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes by ferry to get from Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn to Governor's Island. Once there, you might as well be a world away. Just ask Antoni Porowski, who lives in Manhattan, yet found himself "awestruck" by the contrasting beauty.
Men's Journal has an exclusive preview of Porowski visiting Collective Retreats on the 172-acre island in the heart of New York Harbor for his four-part docuseries, Best of the World with Antoni Porowski, premiering Sunday, June 7, at 9 p.m. ET on National Geographic and streaming the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.
The docuseries follows Porowski, 42, "as he travels the globe to uncover what makes a destination unforgettable - from iconic landmarks and hidden gems to the people, flavors, and experiences beyond National Geographic's annual Best of the World franchise."
The New York City episode takes an introspective Porowski to Collective Retreat's six-acre compound, home to 29 swanky tents and private suites offering picturesque skyline views. Porowski tours a standard tent (from $330 per night) and a summer suite ($930 per night), complete with a king-size bed and a deck overlooking the harbor and the Statue of Liberty.
In the clip, Porowski walks into the summer suite just as the sun is about to set, and he can't help but be mesmerized by the juxtaposition right in front of him.
"The only time that I've experienced a shift in perspective is usually in nature when you're looking at a mountain range," Porowski says in the clip, with his trusty pit bull-beagle mix, Neon, in tow. "There's something about the serenity and the chaos of all of it: ships passing and helicopters, and we're out in nature in this beautiful island that's steeped in all of this weird history. And then you have this colossus that is Manhattan just peaking through to your right. This is, like, a beautiful, messy symphony. I'm actually awestruck."
Best of the World takes the Montreal native to some of the world's most extraordinary destinations, including Mexico City, Paris, and London, where he'll aim to take viewers beyond the guidebooks to discover the true essence of each city, its culture, and, most importantly, its people.
This is Porowski's second project with National Geographic. He previously hosted No Taste Like Home, visiting the hometowns of celebs like James Marsden, Justin Theroux, and Issa Rae, among others.
For Best of the World, Porowski visits the cities and everyday people that make the world go round.
