Shirts worn by World Cup legends Pelé and Maradona for sale
By Dean Murray
A trio of shirts worn by World Cup legends Pelé, Diego Maradona and Bobby Moore could fetch more than $13,000 at auction.
The jerseys are being sold next week in Wellingborough-based Budds Auctions' Pitch to Podium sale.
Pelé's shirt from his time at the New York Cosmos - a period credited with helping popularize professional soccer in the United States - is expected to command the highest sum.
The top, from 1977, features the icon's name on the reverse and carries an estimate of between more than $8,000 and more than $10,000.
England World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore wore the light-blue "Mainstay All Stars" shirt during a 1979 South Africa tour of British veteran professionals led by Bobby Charlton. It carries an estimate of between more than $2,000 and more than $2,500.
Also included is a sky blue Argentina national team shirt worn by Diego Maradona during the 1987 Copa América in Argentina, offered with an estimate of between more than $4,500 and more than $7,000.
All three players are regarded as World Cup legends.
Moore captained England to victory in 1966, while Pelé remains the only player to win three tournaments.
Maradona inspired Argentina's triumph in 1986 with one of the most iconic individual performances in the competition's history.
The auction is live on June 9 and 10.
