Three questions with Fort Benning’s Deputy Garrison Commander George Steuber

The Ledger-Enquirer recently asked Fort Benning Deputy Garrison Commander/Garrison Manager George Steuber three questions about his experience living in the Chattahoochee Valley and working on post. Here’s what he had to say:

1. What brought you to this area?

I have to say that the Army brought me to the area both times I have been here.

The first time was over 40 years ago as a young soldier going through advanced individual training and jump school, and more recently as part of the Civilian Executive Development Assignment Program. For the latter assignment, my choices were Atlanta with Installation Management Command southeast regional headquarters or Fort Benning.

Fort Benning won, hands down.

2. What do you like best about living here?

Being part of the Fort Benning community is the best aspect of living here. I don’t mean just Fort Benning proper, but the larger Eastern Alabama/Western Georgia area that encircles and embraces Fort Benning. My wife and I have never seen a more cosmopolitan area than this one without all the problems associated with large metropolitan areas.

Where else can you find such a variety of cultural events, outdoor venues and community activities without having to fight impossible traffic jams and pollution?

The Chattahoochee Valley area is truly the gem of the Southeast.

3. What advice would you give to somebody moving here?

Take advantage of all the information resources that are available on the Internet and through the many service organizations serving the area. A little research before you arrive will help you find just what you are looking for in housing, schools, churches and recreational activities. There is truly something here for everyone to enjoy, and my wife, Patricia, and I appreciate the opportunity to be members of this great community.
