The Columbus metropolitan area includes Muscogee, Harris and Chattahoochee counties in Georgia and Russell County in Alabama. Following the 2000 U.S. Census, the Columbus area ranked 138th on the list of most populous metropolitan areas in the United States with a population of 274,624.
Ranking ahead of Columbus were Atlanta (11th), Birmingham, Ala. (55th), Mobile, Ala. (79th), Augusta, Ga./Aiken, S.C. (87th), Huntsville, Ala. (119th), Montgomery, Ala. (123rd), Macon, Ga. (126th) and Savannah, Ga. (135th).
