Royal Caribbean crew rescues passenger in CocoCay pier scare
Thanks to the swift response of Royal Caribbean crew members, a cruise passenger is safe and recovering after a frightening fall from the pier at the cruise line's private island in The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay.
The incident occurred on July 11, when an unidentified man fell into the water between the pier and the 137,276-gross-ton Adventure of the Seas. Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas was also docked at CocoCay at the time.

Video shows man's rescue after pier fall at Perfect Day at CocoCay
Video captured by a bystander and shared by user @dogsfamily_love on TikTok showed the panicked moments after the fall, as nearby guests and crew rushed toward the edge of the pier. More than a dozen crew members responded quickly with rescue equipment and pulled the man from the water within minutes.
"Brave men and women went to the rescue, going into the water to try and save the man. So emotional, watch until the end," @dogsfamily_love captioned the video, which appeared to be filmed from Wonder of the Seas.

A second video posted by @dogsfamily_love shows the moment the man was pulled from the water on a stretcher by a large group of crew members, covered with a blanket, and then rushed on board Wonder of the Seas for medical attention.
Onlookers cheered and applauded as the rescue was completed.
What caused the man's pier fall is unconfirmed, but a scooter accident is rumored
Exactly how the man ended up in the water remains unclear. Some social media users who said they were at CocoCay during the incident claim he was riding a mobility scooter that malfunctioned, sending him off the edge of the pier. Royal Caribbean has not confirmed that account, or made any official statement about the incident.
If a scooter was involved, it would mark the second scooter accident at a cruise line private destination in The Bahamas this year. In May, an 88-year-old woman died after losing control of her mobility scooter and going off the pier at Carnival's Celebration Key.

The piers at Perfect Day at CocoCay and Celebration Key both include safety measures like bright yellow boundary lines to help prevent passengers from getting too close to the edge. But like most cruise ship piers, they have no barriers in the area where ships dock. That's because open space is needed to secure ships and deploy gangways and supply ramps.
Cruisers should use extra caution on cruise ship piers
These back-to-back incidents serve as underscore just how hazardous cruise ship piers can be, especially for mobility scooter users. Passengers using mobility scooters should stay well clear of the pier's edge. When getting on and off the ship, it's a good idea to plan extra time, avoid pier areas during crowded times, and ask crew members for guidance if you're unfamiliar with a port's layout.
But it's not just mobility scooter users that need to mind the gap on cruise ship piers. Parents should watch children closely and all passengers should stay alert and avoid distractions while traveling to and from the ship.
In August 2025, one Royal Caribbean passenger had to be rescued after falling from the CocoCay pier while filming Star of the Seas with his smartphone. A few months earlier, a child was rescued after falling between Symphony of the Seas and the pier, as reported by fan blog Royal Caribbean Blog.

"The spectacle of the private island is an easy distraction. As with so many accidents, it takes just a quick moment for something like this to occur," Royal Caribbean Blog's Matt Hochberg wrote in coverage of the child's CocoCay pier fall.
Most travelers know the dangers of being distracted while walking along busy streets, but as recent cruise port incidents show, getting distracted on a cruise ship pier can be just as perilous.
